18th June 2022 – Waterloo Anniversary Game

The celebrate the 18th of June falling on a Saturday, yesterday the Friends of General Haig played a Waterloo based game. It was scenario based on D’Erlon’s attack and Picton’s defence, supported by the Union and Household brigades.

After a spirited start by the French ,who swarmed up the ridge line, the British heavy cavalry rode to the rescue, and elements made it all the way to the Grand battery gun line. Just as in the real battle, the British cavalry were thrown back up the ridge, and the French reorganised for another attack. Some spirited actions by British and Hanoverian infantry battalions continued to hold back the French, and the game ended in an Allied victory with the ridge still in Wellington’s hands.

The game was played with Black Powder, with some slight mods. to simplify some aspects, and to encourage the heavy cavalry attack in a similar way to the actual battle. All concerned had a great day, and are looking forward to the next big battle; perhaps Ligny 🤔.
